The Sawing Job That Kept on Going... and Going
It's obvious that Greg Turk loves his work. "I am often told that I go overboard when building," Turk said. It's his attention to quality, whether building or sawing, that brings most of his clients by word-of-mouth. This winning barn project, which began as a custom sawing job, is no exception.
The clients planned to have some logging done at their new property, and asked Turk to stop by to discuss the sawing job. When he arrived, he said, "My eyes got real big because I was looking at a pile of logs ten feet tall and almost 90 feet long, each log 16 feet in length. Off to the side were 60 poplar logs, most longer than 40 feet. Frankly, I had never encountered a log pile of this magnitude."
Because the client was going out of town for a month, the sawing job grew to include building frames to stack and dry the wood for framing lumber. Turk and a friend "got serious" and began sawing an average of 1800 - 2000 board feet per day. He said, "The Re-Sharp program from Wood-Mizer provided excellent service throughout the job."
A month later, when the client returned from his travels, all the pine was sawn and stacked. "To say that the client was pleased and impressed would be an understatement," Turk said. From there, the job turned into actually building the barn, which was to be 68 feet by 54 feet in finished dimension. Two months later, the barn was complete . or so he thought.
Then, one by one, the client added extra jobs, including making the front part of the center bay of the barn into living quarters, complete with poplar cabinets made by the clients and Turk as a team. Finally, Turk asked the clients, "Are we done yet?" "Yes, for now," they replied. "That is, until we start the house." |
