Woodland View Stables is History Rebuilt
Long before his son Shane set out to create the dream of Woodland View Farm and Stables, David Newvine had operated the Lazy-N-Stables, well known both locally and nationally in its day. But the barn had set idle for years, and was in need of some TLC.
"Shane had partnered with a local horse trainer and renovations had begun on the existing 25 by 75-foot barn. Immediately all seven stalls were full plus some. In the spring of 2000, he approached me and wanted to expand the business. That is where the story really begins," said David Newvine.
Father and son set to work. They decided to add a 50 by 50-foot addition on the existing barn and build a 60 by 150-foot riding arena. When completed the barn would hold a total of 21 horses, have two large heated tack rooms, and two heated wash stalls.
With the plan they designed on AutoCAD 2000, son began looking for financing and father planned to cut all the lumber except roof trusses on his Wood-Mizer. The problem was no logs! The logs were soon found, financing complete, and excavation began. But with a full-time sawing business, David Newvine needed help. He called on long-time friend and neighbor, Ken, for whom he had sawed and helped build a garage two years prior.
They cut over 20,000 board feet, mostly hemlock, and the project was finally completed in 2001. David Newvine concluded, "Through the process my son sought outside bids on all phases of the project. Based on the estimates, we saved up to $45,000 in material. The mill certainly paid for itself and has proven to be a very valuable asset to our farm. I can honestly say that without the Wood-Mizer mill, this project would still be just a dream!" |
